Juan Atkins

Juan Atkins created techno. Born in Detroit and raised partly in nearby Belleville, he formed Cybotron with Rick Davis in 1981. Tracks like “Alleys of Your Mind,” “Clear,” and “Techno City” pointed electronic funk toward the future. In 1985 he launched his label Metroplex and released “No UFO’s” as Model 500, the blueprint for Detroit techno. Alongside Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, two younger friends he helped bring into music, he became one of the Belleville Three. Over four decades he kept pushing forward, as Model 500, as Infiniti, and in Borderland with Moritz von Oswald. They called him the Originator. Juan passed away in 2026 at 64.
